Bug List
Bug: When traffic
stops on I4 because people are rubbernecking
Why: People slow
down when there are accidents or people are pulled over both for safety reasons
and because they want to see what happened. This causes a chain reaction of
cars slowing down more and more until traffic briefly comes to a stop.
Bug: When the
shower takes a long time to heat up
Why: The plumbing in my house is not a direct heat
supply to each faucet so the hot water has to run through the house before it
gets to the shower.
Bug: When drivers
use exit lanes to get ahead of everyone else, causing more traffic
Why: I believe
that this issue is caused by the human need to get ahead, and also the human hate
of traffic. So people want to get home quicker and will sometimes do things
that benefit themselves at the cost of everyone else.
Bug: When the Fat
Daddy’s line is already extremely long at 9:00 PM on Wednesdays
Why: Since bars
have occupancy limits, they eventually have to stop letting people in. Every
week that Fat’s is busy and people aren’t let in, they come earlier the
following week to avoid this issue and the usual time that people arrive gets
earlier.
Bug: When classes
are “weed out” classes that are meant to make people change majors
Why: UF students
declare their major in their freshman year instead of proving their merit in
the first two years before getting into a certain college. This allows majors
and colleges to become overpopulated and creates the need to make people change
majors.
Bug: When investment banks recruit for summer
internships over a year and a half before the start date
Why: Every year,
top investment banks are looking for the best talent so one bank will jump the
gun on every other bank by opening their application and every other bank will
follow in suit. Year to year, the day that the first bank opens their
application is earlier than the year before because of this.
Bug: When people do not use the far left turn lane
at the intersection by my house and only one can be used since it backs up far
enough to block the far left lane.
Why: This
intersection is very close to I4 so most people are commuting to Orlando and don’t
use the far left turn lane as it would be more difficult to merge onto the
interstate after turning.
Bug: When there
is ice on my windshield and I don’t have anything to get it off with
Why: Living in
Florida, this problem does not come often so I am never prepared for it when it
does.
Bug: The buzzing
noise that comes from my blown subwoofer
Why: I played
music, with too much bass, too loud in my truck and now the subwoofer has
blown. Since I still listen to music, it makes a buzzing noise that will
persist until I put a new subwoofer in.
Bug: When my
computer at work freezes or slows down due to large excel models
Why: Sometimes at
work, there are many different applications running alongside very large excel
models that cause too much stress for the computer to handle. This results in
slow operation and sometimes full freezing of the computer.
Bug: When I drink
coffee too soon and it burns my tongue and mouth.
Why: This problem
seems to be personal as I continue to do this even though I know the coffee is
going to be hot right when it is ready. But it happens because the coffee is
brewed at 192 degrees and does not cool down very fast.
Bug: When bears
that live in the woods behind my house scatter the trash from the can around
our driveway and yard.
Why: I am the
last one to leave the house in the morning but it is a long time before the
trash service comes which allows ample time for a nosy bear to have a light
snack of rotten eggs and used tissues
Bug: When I need
to go to the DMV or tax collector’s office but can’t find time since they close
at the same time or before I get off work.
Why: Government
employees are not going to be paid overtime, so offices close at specific times
that do not allow that. This usually occurs during normal business hours so I
would have to take off work to find a time to go.
Bug: When satellite
TV cuts out during a live sporting event I am watching.
Why: Rain and
storms cause satellite service to be disrupted so bad weather causes this.
Bug: When UF
parking tickets me for parking in the driveway of my own house even though I
was only parking their momentarily to pick something up
Why: UF parking
has an obligation to enforce parking rules and it technically isn’t a parking
space
Bug: Having to
take ProctorU exams while at school.
Why: I actually
don’t know why we have to take exams online, but I assume it has to do with
reducing costs for the school.
Bug: When I have
to search for quarters to do my laundry at school.
Why: Our washers
and dryers do not accept cards so we have to use quarters for them to operate.
Bug: When there
are ads during youtube videos.
Why: In order to
continue operating and providing a free service, youtube has to gain ad revenue
by putting ads into certain videos
Bug: When I get
home and the keypad for the garage door doesn’t work
Why: The pulley
system pulls power from the house but the actual keypad runs off a battery so
it eventually dies and the batteries need to be replaced
Bug: When I don’t
get what I ordered in a drive through line
Why: I honestly
think workers are less careful about getting drive through orders correct because
they usually won’t have to deal with the angry customer but I am not sure if
this is why this happens.
Creating this list was much more difficult than I expected.
When I saw the assignment, I thought it would be extremely easy but I was
wrong. I made a note in my phone for a few days and wrote things down as they bugged
me but this only got me to around 10 bugs. For the second half of my bugs I had
to think a lot more about what bugs me that has a reason that isn’t caused by
me. This is why it was more difficult because many of the things that bug me
are usually a result of my own actions when I think about them deeply.
Hi Patrick,
ReplyDeleteI as well thought this assignment was a lot more difficult than I expected it to be. You brought up some great points in your list that I think could be real opportunities for people. The DMV bug you mentioned makes me laugh because of how accurate it is for the DMV and usually every other governmental office. Your bug about ProctorU is also valid, as I have never had an easy experience with them and think that taking exams online defeats the whole experience aspect to college.
Hi Patrick,
ReplyDeleteI struggled with this assignment too, but you did an excellent job choosing bugs from a variety of different factors in your life. A lot of your bugs are relatable because I also experience them quite often. You did a really good job explaining the reasons for the bugs, which made it easy to understand why they happen and why they bug you. Great first post!
Even though we were warned that this assignment would be harder than expected I still didn’t think I would have as much difficultly coming up with 20 ‘bugs’ as I did. I can agree with your first bug about traffic stopping on the interstate. I drive I75 everyday and I hate it when I see a wreck because I know it is going to take twice as long to get to my exit. Not only because of the emergency personnel but also the people rubbernecking.
