Assignment 26A

1) For the past six months I have been applying for extremely sought after internships for next summer in New York City. I hav probably applied to about 20 of the top investment banks in the world, which I am definitely not the best candidate. For instance, one of these internships in particular had 80,000 applications last year for 100 spots. Needless to say I have been failing a lot since I started applying for these.
2) I have learned a huge amount about the recruiting process for these banks which is actually very good for me because the next set of banks are about to open their applications. I am much closer to their target candidate and since I have already been through the top banks’ grueling processes, I am better prepared to take on the next ones.
3) I think failure is a necessity in life. If you don’t ever fail then you won’t be able to appreciate a good success or the value of hard work. It definitely teaches you a lot about whatever you failed at but also about yourself. Obviously when I fail I get upset but I just start to think about what I can do to either fix it or do better next time. Honestly, this class hasn’t made me more or less open to failure.

  1. Hi Mason,
I understand the internship struggle very much. I’m currently struggling with finding a job post-graduation. However, it is important to remember not to get discouraged; you’ve got to keep pushing yourself. Failure is a necessity of life and it’s one that everyone has to go through no matter what. I’m sure if you keep pushing yourself over the next year you’ll land that internship.

  2. Finding an internship can be very close related to finding a job. I still have another year and half before I finish my degree, but I have already thought about what jobs I want to apply for. I know that from being on the other side of the job selection process it can be very hard to narrow down the applicants to want you think are the best for the position open. Good luck on finding an internship

  3. I’m glad you have learned a lot about the internship process. It is always disheartening to feel like your application wasn’t even looked at, even if you feel you weren’t the best candidate. It is really just a gamble when applying to jobs and you just have to put the right buzz words and experience on your resume to make you stand out.

  4. Patrick,

I am glad to see that you have putting in so much effort to become a better working professional. Internships are highly competitive but very necessary to secure a great full-time position. It is reassuring to know I am not the only one struggling to land certain positions. Being a college student looking for work experience is tough, but we can do it.
