For this assignment, I read “Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson. The thing that surprised me
the most was honestly the way that Apple got its name. I had heard the part
about Apple coming before Atari in a phone book, but I never thought that it
came to him while he was at an apple farm the day the name had to be picked for
government filings. I think the thing I admired most was his drive to achieve
the impossible. The book detailed out his “reality distortion field,” which was
the idea that if he decided something should be a certain way, he would not let
current ideas on how something works hold him back from finding the answer. One
thing I didn’t really like was how he handled the situation with his daughter.
He denied that she was his daughter after paternity tests and didn’t end up
making up with her until much later. Jobs definitely faced adversity. He
dropped out of college and then after starting Apple, left due to personal
relationships with other key personnel. In both of these situations, he bounced
back and made the best of it. He started Apple after dropping out and then
after leaving Apple, he made an investment in Pixar that eventually led him
back to Apple.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur
exhibited?
Jobs really just had the ability to look forward on where
technology was heading. Being able to take a dream and make it a reality is not
a skill that many people possess.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing
to you.
I got kind of confused about his involvement in NexT and how it
got him back to Apple.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the
entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
1) When did you
first think of the iPhone?
Why:
iPhones are a huge part of our lives now so the creative process is interesting
to me.
2) What was
your coolest acid trip?
Why:
He used to be a little druggy guy.
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of
hard work? Do you share that opinion?
I think
he held hard work in high regard. He definitely worked hard himself and was
known in his early days of Apple for being too hard on people sometimes. I
definitely think that hard work can help you succeed.
I have this book on my to-read list. I like how Steve Jobs created his business. I did not know that was how Apple got its name either. It’s very interesting how people think and come up with their business names. Steve Jobs was very innovated, because he created a product that no one else had and was able to become the front runner in the cell phone and Mp3 market.
ReplyDeleteSteve Jobs by Walter Isaacson is an incredible book. I greatly enjoyed it when I read it and I appreciate that you were able to identify that Steve Jobs was no god, but just a regular guy just like you and me. He was incredibly ingenius in his ideas, but he enjoyed recreation like that rest of us and he used his teachings from Buddhism and substances to influence his life.
